Identifying Never-Borrowed Books with the Collection Health Chart
Why Collection Health Matters
Not every book in your collection gets borrowed. Books that have never been checked out are known as dead stock — they take up shelf space and budget without serving your patrons. The Collection Health tools in Books Analytics help you find them.
Where to Find It
Go to Reports → Books Analytics in the admin sidebar, or navigate to /admin/books-analytics.
The Never Borrowed Stat Card
In the summary grid at the top of the page, you will see a card labelled Never Borrowed. This shows the total count of items in your collection that have never been checked out since they were added to the catalog.
A high number here is a signal to review those titles — they may be outdated, duplicated, poorly promoted, or simply in the wrong section.
The Collection Health Doughnut Chart
Below the summary grid, the Collection Health chart shows two segments:
- Active — Books that have been borrowed at least once.
- Never Borrowed — Books that have never been checked out.
Hover over either segment to see the exact count and percentage.
What To Do with This Information
Once you know which books have never been borrowed, you can:
- Promote them — Feature never-borrowed titles in displays, recommendations, or reading programs.
- Weed them — If a book is outdated or irrelevant, consider withdrawing it. Use the Weeding Report (Catalog → Weeding Report) to identify candidates.
- Relocate them — Sometimes a book is in the wrong section and would get more attention elsewhere.
If Something Goes Wrong
- Never Borrowed count seems wrong — The count reflects items currently marked as Active in the catalog. Withdrawn or lost items are excluded.
